A Guide to Choosing a Forklift

Finding the Right Forklift for Your Warehouse or Business Site

Forklifts are commonly used in warehouses, construction sites, freight depots, mining sites and in many situations where moving large, heavy loads is a standard daily practice. There are several types of forklift, with variations in load capacity and fuel source. Choosing the appropriate type of forklift will have a significant impact on productivity and operating costs. The appropriate type of forklift is also a safety concern. Potential purchasers should also consider versatility, low-emission designs (especially indoors) and value for money. The idea is to match the tool to the task.

What Is a Forklift?

A forklift is an industrial vehicle designed for lifting and moving loads over short distances. It uses two metal prongs, known as forks or tynes, at the front of the vehicle to lift and move heavy loads. Forklifts operate on a counterbalance principle, where the weight is kept low and at the rear of the machine. This balances the load being carried at the front, ensuring stability during lifting and transport. Medium-powered forklifts are usually powered by an electrical battery. High-load forklifts generally use combustion engines powered by diesel, petrol, or LPG. There are some exceptions, depending on the fuels and energy available at the site.

Who can Operate a Forklift?

Most forklifts require the operator to have an appropriate licence. There are exceptions. If the device is small in size and designed so that the operator walks behind the machine, then a licence is not usually required. These machines usually just lift the load to a height less than 90cm.

Electric 3-Wheel Forklifts

Electric 3-wheel forklifts are becoming the standard for indoor warehouses. Their compact size and tight turning circle make them ideal for narrow aisles and confined spaces. Modern lithium battery technology allows fast charging with minimal downtime; electrical power is easily available in any modern building. And the lower noise and zero emissions improve indoor air quality while minimising running costs.

All-Terrain Forklifts

For outdoor worksites such as construction zones, stage productions and festivals, farms, and yards with uneven surfaces, all-terrain forklifts remain essential. These designs will feature higher ground clearance, heavy-duty suspension, and sometimes have a four-wheel drive option.  Newer models feature greater operator comfort for long all day outdoors use. Long-term comfort affects operator fatigue, and this is a legitimate safety issue. Diesel powered all terrain forklift are ideal for mining or construction sites, where many other vehicles also use diesel.

Walkie Stackers and Pedestrian Forklifts

These are small-sized forklift devices, designed for small warehouses, retail stockrooms, and facilities with low-height racking. They have electrically powered lifting, but are manually guided by the operator who walks behind them. They do not require a forklift licence, just some basic training. For these light weight duties they are quite cost-effective and easy to operate/

Articulated Forklifts (Flexi or Bendi Types)

Articulated forklifts are designed for businesses transitioning to narrower aisles without investing in very narrow aisle (VNA) systems. Their swing mast allows them to operate efficiently in tight spaces and often replace reach trucks while increasing storage density.

Supporting Material Handling Equipment

Forklifts often work best alongside complementary equipment. Electric pallet jacks are increasingly replacing manual pallet movers due to improved ergonomics and reduced injury risk. Scissor lift tables are popular in packing stations and workshops, helping reduce bending and overreaching. Conveyor systems are also gaining traction, with modular designs allowing mid-sized facilities to scale operations while reducing reliance on forklifts for short-distance movement.

Automation and Emerging Trends

Automation continues to influence materials handling. Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) are becoming more common in distribution centres, handling repetitive transport tasks. Telematics systems are now standard on many forklifts, offering real-time data on battery status, operator use, maintenance needs, and fault codes. Hybrid forklifts are also emerging, combining diesel power with electric capability for use in emission-regulated zones.

Choosing the Right Forklift for Your Operation

When selecting a forklift, consider;

  • Where it will be used
  • The loads it will carry – weight and physical volume.
  • Aisle width inside the building – the forklift must have easy manoeuvring room.
  • Lifting height – shelf height in the warehouse, or unloading a truck
  • The power or fuel you will have available.
  • Duty cycle of the power. Ideally, we can get a day’s work on one electrical charge.

Electric forklifts are well-suited to indoor operations, while LPG, diesel, or all-terrain models may be better for outdoor environments. Safety, operator comfort, and long-term operating costs should be factored in alongside purchase price.

The Right Construction Machinery for Sale, For Your Needs

The right forklift is one that fits your space, workload, and budget while keeping staff safe and operations efficient. It is easy to get carried away when we see an advertisement that says forklifts for sale, and easy to think we are getting a bargain if the price is lower than expected. But we always have to make sure we have the right equipment for the job. Look at your business situation, and you will be in a better position to find the right equipment, the best solution that helps run everything more efficiently.
